Company Profile : GAIL (India) Limited was incorporated in August 1984 as a Central Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoP&NG). The company used to be known as Gas Authority of India Limited. It is India's principal gas transmission and marketing company. The company was initially given the responsibility of construction, operation & maintenance of the Hazira – Vijaypur – Jagdishpur (HVJ) pipeline project. It was one of the largest cross-country natural gas pipeline projects in the world. This 1800-kilometre-long pipeline was built at a cost of INR17 billion (US$280 million) and it laid the foundation for development of market for natural gas in India. GAIL commissioned the 2,800 kilometres (1,700 mi) Hazira-Vijaipur-Jagdishpur (HVJ) pipeline in 1991. Between 1991 and 1993, three liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) plants were constructed and some regional pipelines acquired, enabling GAIL to begin its gas transportation in various parts of India.
